Hands about Corona
This is a community art photo project that was developed during Covid, May – September 2020. I still get reactions to the project and people still ask if there will be a book.
I asked people on the street and also friends and family, to show with their hands how they feel about Covid. I took pictures of their gestures and posted them with their name, and in one sentence the meaning of their gesture.
I collected 100 gestures and had 100 meaningful encounters. On this page there are 36 photo’s, with explanation in Dutch.
After the photo’s there are some impressions of projects with Hands about Corona.

EXECUTING THE PROJECT
The photo’s show the place and the bench, where most of my encounters happened and most of the photo’s were taken. I made a booklet to show people the project and to explain what the project was about

EXHIBITION IN THE CHURCH
Photo’s were printed on A3 and exhibited in the church. I also made drawings of some gestures.
People could walk in freely and take a moment. There was a table with materials to write their feelings down.

YOUTH IN CHURCH
I was invited to execute the project with youth from my church. They reacted in their own, spontanious way.
Here are some photo’s I took.

to enjoy myself

I still work like normal

in quarantaine

and back to nature
CULTUREL TRAINING
During an online training to educate primary school teachers to become a Cultural Coördinator in their schools, I introduced the project.
I asked the teachers to show their own gesture and to share their thoughts.
In this way, we could execute an art project,
even online. And to reflect on Covid at the same time.

EXHIBITION AT ATELIER ROUTE
I showed the project in a casual way, during the Atelier Route in 2020.
On the photo you see one of the persons that I photographed, mimic his own gesture.

MEDITATIVE MOMENT AND SERVICE
During Covid there were no live services in church. I was invited to show my project in a weekday video streaming and I composed a meditative programme of half an hour
with the project.
In an online service they showed some photo’s and someone sang a song with it. I explained something about the project. The reverent said that the project shows attention for faith, hope and love.
